What happens at your ear wax appointment

A calm, unhurried appointment in our private consultation room. You'll know what's happening at every step.

Appointments usually take around 30 minutes

    Book online or call us. If advised by the clinic, use olive oil drops for a few days beforehand to soften the wax. Avoid cotton buds, and don't use drops if you think your ear drum may be perforated.

    A few questions and a look in your ears

    The pharmacist asks about your symptoms and medical history, then looks in both ears and explains what they see before anything else happens.

    If suitable and you're happy to go ahead, wax is removed under a magnified view using a fine suction tube and single-use tips. You may hear a whooshing noise — you can ask to stop at any time.

What if the wax can't all be removed?

Sometimes wax is very hard or deep and can't all be removed safely in one visit. If that happens, the pharmacist will explain why and may suggest using drops for a few days before a follow-up appointment. If they see anything that needs a doctor, such as signs of infection, they'll advise you to contact your GP.

  • Microsuction uses a fine, gentle suction tube to remove wax from the ear canal while the pharmacist looks into your ear under magnification. Unlike ear irrigation, no water is flushed into the ear.

  • It's comfortable for most people. You'll hear a whooshing or crackling noise while the wax is removed, and some people feel a cool sensation or brief light-headedness. Tell the pharmacist if anything feels uncomfortable and they'll pause.

  • If advised by the clinic, using olive oil drops for a few days before your appointment can help soften the wax. Don't use drops if you think your ear drum may be perforated, and avoid cotton buds, which can push wax further in. If you're not sure, call us on 020 75826344 and ask a pharmacist.

  • Not always. It may not be suitable if you have a perforated ear drum, an ear infection, or have had recent ear surgery. If you have severe ear pain, discharge or bleeding from the ear, sudden hearing loss or dizziness, please contact your GP or NHS 111 rather than booking.
