When the chikungunya vaccine comes up

It is not usually advised for every traveller to the destinations in our guides, but it is sometimes advised for Thailand, India and Vietnam, depending on the route and what you plan to do. Each guide explains why.

About the vaccine

What it is

Chikungunya is a viral infection found in some tropical and subtropical regions. It usually causes fever, joint and muscle pain, headache and rash, and joint pain can sometimes last for months.

How it is caught

It is spread by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, which bite mainly during the day.

Who it is advised for

Alongside avoiding mosquito bites, vaccination may be considered for travellers to areas with an active outbreak, and for long-term or frequent travellers to areas where chikungunya has been reported in the past five years. One type of vaccine is not suitable for people with certain health conditions, so a health check is needed first.

The vaccine course

Two vaccines are licensed in the UK, each given as a single injection. Which one is suitable depends on your age and health, and one type should be given at least 30 days before travel.
